Description: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a regional organization comprised of ten Southeast Asian states.
Summary:

ASEAN was formed in 1967 to promote intergovernmental cooperation and facilitate economic integration among its members. Its principal goals include accelerating economic growth, social progress and socio-cultural evolution among its members, alongside the protection of regional stability and the provision of a mechanism for member countries to resolve differences peacefully. If ASEAN were a single entity, it would rank as the sixth largest economy in the world, behind the USA, China, Japan, Germany and the UK.

Organization Type: Regional Union or Community
Issue areas covered:

ASEAN has adapted a Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP) Animal Welfare and Environmental Sustainability Module, Layers, Broilers and Ducks.

Key opportunities and dates for input:
  • A calendar of meetings is published on its website.
Requirements for participation:
  • MGOs can engage with ASEAN. See Asian’s publication on “Engagement with Entities.”
Advocacy Opportunities:
  •  The Good Husbandry Practices work opens the possibility of developing good practice resources on AW in others areas.
  •  The work by the African Union (AU) could be used as an example in advocacy with ASEAN, in favor of the development of a RAWS/AW policy covering the REC.
